Sewing Bee Fabrics Tutorial
Make Your Own Reusable, Washable Wipes

We use cloth nappies in our house and cloth wipes on hands and bums, so I figured it was about time I changed my disposable make up remover face wipe habits and made myself some reusable face fluff!
This is how I make all my wipes. It is only the materials I will change for different uses, so you could use these washable versions in place of kitchen towels, baby wipes, face wipes, cleaning cloths etc! Just think how thrifty  and eco-friendly you could be by upcycling all your scraps!
What you will need:
Fabric scraps! But what to use?
For face wipes, I would recommend using soft cotton jersey on one side which makes a great all purpose wipe feel (I'm cutting up some old baby outfits!). The other side depends on what you like. If, like me, you like to wake your skin up a little with a rougher exfoliating type of wipe, then scraps from a towel/flannel or microfiber would work great. I used some textured waffle cotton which was originally a pillow case, but far too rough for my liking for that use!
If you prefer more soft and luxurious then maybe try some fleece as a backing. Be warned though - fleece isn't the most absorbent material so it won't be good for dabbing from a bottle but it works great if submersed and squeezed, or it would be great to dry your face after/take away excess make up powder.
For general cleaning I tend to use standard cotton on one side and towelling on the other. Cuddle fleece scraps with towelling work great for taking away excess moisture then shining up mirrors and metal after cleaning. Fleece and towelling also make for a great all purpose baby hand cleaning wipe. 2 or 3 layers of cotton jersey is a great combo for cleaning baby bums.
How to make it:
As your making the wipes, you get to decide the size and material!
For my face wipes, I used 1 layer cotton jersey and 1 layer textured cotton. I made mine about 3 inches square.
Optional - you might want to pin the first couple of wipes till you get the hang of it or if you want them extra neat as a present.
Sew up 3 edges. Don't forget if you are using stretchy material like cotton jersey, you may want to switch to a ballpoint needle or twin needle. I also use a knit foot for my sewing machine, but a walking foot will also help to keep your stretchy materials moving through at the same speed.
Clip your corners then turn right side out
Tuck the 4th edge to fold under on itself and top stitch it. Continue your top stitching right the way around.
Iron flat
Repeat! I figured about 14 should give me a fresh wipe each day without ever running low.
Then find something pretty to store them in! I would suggest if possible to wash them in a mesh bag or you'll find a few seem to congregate in the lining around the washing machine door regardless of how well you think you've tucked them in the back of the machine!

Happy Sewing!
Love the idea of these – so sustainable and eco-friendly.
Great tutorial, thank you! I’ve now got 34 cotton squares cut out, sitting on some towelling squares ready to sew! I loved the idea in the comments about making them as gifts with some cleaner!
That sounds fantastic!
I am interested in this face cloth but wondered if you wash the cloths after each use? Thanks for helping me understand the use.
Yep, I do. I have about 10. I just pop them in the washing machine with my normal clothes wash then I always have a fresh clean wipe.
Made some for my mum, she loves them!
Yay! I’m so pleased
I am inspired and am going to make for Christmas presents with some face cleansers… Am trying to use more eco friendly products and these are a great idea.
Thank you! They make really lovely presents. I’d definitely be happy receiving them as a gift! We too are always on the lookout for more eco-friendly ideas and have just won an award from surfers against sewage for our efforts. Do let me know if you see any more sewing ideas to reduce disposable products!
Thankyou so much. Very excited to make these!
