Sewing Bee Fabrics Tutorial
How To Make Pebble Art With Fabric Scraps

I decided to have a bit of fun with my fabric scraps by using them to brighten up the garden and make the patio area more fun for my toddlers. This is a really quick and easy project to do. I made plant pot pebble animals, but I think a bit of left over Christmas fabric on pebbles put around the base of a poinsettia would make a fantastic little Christmas present.
What you will need:
Scraps of cotton fabric
White pva glue / modge podge
Acrylic paint
Clear sealant (I used one by plastikote)
How To Make It:
I started off by painting my pebbles white. This isn't essential but it does mean that your colours will show up more vividly on top, which is especially so if you are using light coloured fabrics.

Next, I cut out mainly animals from scrap fabrics to fit the size of the pebbles. It's much easier to get a smooth finish if your fabric is small. I left about 1/2cm around the outside of the animal for blending the paint into. Other patterns would work really well too - Christmas fabrics around a poinsettia, or bright zigzags and stripes put in with a mothers day potted pansy etc etc!

Glue the fabric to the stone with plenty of white glue. Make sure the glue is spread out evenly underneath the fabric or you may end up with lumps and bumps showing up once they have dried. It really doesn't matter if your glue has seeped through the fabric....in fact, it'll probably stick better if it does.

Paint the rest of the stone with a complimentary acrylic colour paint, blending it over the edges of the fabric. I didn't bother painting the bottom as this won't be visible when they are sitting in a plant pot.

When the paint dried, I gave it a quick spray with clear sealant then they were good to go.

I added my pebble art to the plant pots in the garden then let my toddlers free on them!

Have you had a go making a fabric pebbles? What fabric patterns do you think would be most fun to go around plant pots? I'd love to hear your ideas and inspirations.

Thanks Maria, so glad you like it 🙂
These would be cute with sewing notion fabrics then use to hold down paper patterns when cutting fabric. (Sorry if that was a run-on sentence LOL).
You are absolutely right! I don’t know how I didn’t think of pattern weights when I was making them! I definitely need to make more now!! Thanks so much for your idea.
What a cool idea, Linda! I’m going to do this with the kids. Our driveway is made with pebbles, so no shortage to choose from.
Thank you so much Pam. I have visions of your entire drive ending up a sea of fabric scraps now haha. I’d love to see how they turn out.
