How To Sew A Quick Hat
As most of you know, I am not a pattern designer, I am simply someone who loves to sew. I love playing with fabric and making things up as I go along. I know that not everyone likes to wing it, so Ive made you a free PDF sewing pattern with all the pieces you’d need to recreate this hat.
It has been designed for my 3 /1/2 year old, so it is aimed at a head circumference of about 49cm (approx. 19 1/2 inches). To scale the pattern up or down, measure your head circumference, then englarge / shrink your print out until the smaller curved edge is a little larger than 1/4 of your measurement (use a scrap of thread to measure if you haven’t got an easily curved ruler to hand!).
I used: Just under 1/2 metre of felt

Sorry if I’m being a little dense but how do I work out the size of the hat top? You have given the dimensions of the other pieces. Also – should I be printing this pattern onto graph paper – I’m not sure how you work out the degree of curve on the brim and the hat top?

Hi Penny, no need to print on graph paper or work out curves. Just measure her head circumference, then you know whether to scale up or down the pattern size. For example, a 53cm head is around 8% bigger than the 49cm head I made it for, so I would just print the whole pattern at 108% scale and it’s good to go.

Just use the third calculator down where it works out the percentage from and to, then add (if the pattern is getting bigger) or subtract (if her head is smaller) the percentage it gives you to 100%

Thats a great looking hat! Now I have found a use for all that felt I have stashed away for years.. I hit a fabulous sale on felt a long time ago.. so it will now make costume hats for several great grandies!!
